Product Description Songs and tunes with the spirit of the era when Bluegrass emerged from the traditional, regional sounds of the American South. Review ...a straightforward gem of a recording that sounds like a cross between the Freight Hoppers and The Carter Family. -- Larry Carlin, Bluegrass Breakdown, June 1998The whole production has the feel of a good jam session/song swap, relaxed yet with lots of energy and enthusiasm. -- Bluegrass Unlimited, December 1998 About the Artist This young and energetic San Francisco band is bringing its unique mixture of old-time and bluegrass to a wider audience. The Jades' founder and guitarist, Jeff Kazor, has long had a vision of a band that could revive the deep and haunting sounds of old-time music before the influence of radio, and fuse this sound with the high-lonesome harmonies of bluegrass. While this blurring of the edges is the band's focus, their strength lies equally in their ability to play both genres straight and pure. The Crooked Jades are accomplished singers and instrumentalists. In 1994 band leader Jeff Kazor met Lisa Berman - who plays dobro, slide and clawhammer banjo - at a music camp on Vashon Island. They began playing together regularly at a kitchen jam, where they met bass player Dan Lynn. The band grew out of this jam, with Tom Lucas coming along to complete the core, playing 3-finger, 2-finger and clawhammer banjo, as well as fiddle. "Honorary" Jades, other musicians who frequently play with the band in various combinations are Bill Foss (mandolin, fiddle, clawhammer banjo and banjo-uke), Martha Hawthorne (vocals, guitar and bass, Erik Pearson on fretless banjo, uke and nylon guitar), Adam Tanner (fiddle and mandolin) and Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle). With material ranging from soulful old ballads and rocking string-band dance music to traditionally-inspired original pieces, their 1998 CD, "Going to the Races" and new CD soundtrack, "Seven Sisters: A Kentucky Portrait," exemplify Jeff's dream. The influences of Roscoe Holcomb, Carter Brothers and Son, Uncle Dave Macon and their peers are evident throughout. As they expand into new venues, The Crooked Jades will continue to bring new listeners to old-time and bluegrass and expose existing fans to a different slant on the music they already know and love.
