It's fascinating to witness the maturing of a truly great artist over the course of his or her career. Watching (and hearing) Dan Siegel's career take shape has been no exception. Although he had been recording for several years before laying down the tracks for this CD, I consider "Going Home" the point where Dan's genius really began to shine as he laid the foundation for his signature style of music... a now mature and highly polished style of music I hope he continues to produce for many years to come. The powerful-yet-beautiful "Dark Rain" is without a doubt my favorite track on the CD and showcases Dan's ability with both piano and synthesizer. "Sojourn" comes in a close second on my list of favorites from the album and is equally powerful in expression. "The Untraveled Path" features Grant Geissman on acoustic guitar and sounds like it's hiding an entire orchestra. (Is he REALLY doing all that with a synthesizer?) The instrumental "Don't Let Go" features Everette Harp on saxophone and has more of a traditional jazz sound, whereas "The Last Dance" and the title track "Going Home" are jaunts into the lighter side of the smooth jazz genre. "Dee-Ah", one of Mr. Siegel's better-known tracks, includes a sampling of his vocal talent in addition to his mastery of the keyboards and features Jeff Kashiwa, Gary Herbig and Mark Hollingsworth on saxophones. Kenny Rankin provides vocals for three tracks on the CD: "Next to You", "Can't Remember" and "Searching".All in all, "Going Home" is good for the soul. Very good indeed.
