Description
Frank Sinatra's Columbia recordings began on June 7th 1943 in New York, but for Frank it began in Hollywood over a year earlier. While singing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Frank borrowed the bandleader's ace arranger, Axel Stordahl, to conduct an orchestra with strings, backing him on four songs. The first two songs were new, The Night We Called It A Day and The Lamp- lighter's Serenade which became a modest hit for Frank's rival, Bing Crosby. Then came two standards, The Song Is You and Night And Day which reached No. 16 in the American popular music charts, ac- cording to Joel Whitburn's book,'Pop Memories, 1890-1954'( Record Research, 1986). That first hit occurred in March 1942. Frank had to wait over a year for the next appearance of one of his discs in the charts. Columbia decided to reissue under his name Frank's record of All Or Nothing At All which he had made in 1939 with the Harry James Orchestra. The wait was worth it because the record became a No. 1 hit and a million-seller.
